“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”
-Helen Keller Our Community Service Program began in 1950 and so for over 59 years, our Sisters have been donating their time, money and skills to their communities across the country. We as the Ladies of the Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars have the unique opportunity to educate our communities about our strong tradition of helping not only our Nation’s Veterans and their families but our communities as well. What can we do? Well, the ideas are as endless as the thousands of Auxiliary Sisters in our State. One only need to look to their own community and see what organizations, schools, Community Centers, senior citizen’s day-care centers, home-less shelters, parks, libraries, etc, exist in their areas and find out how the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW can help. And be sure to let them know that it is The Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW that is helping! Three of the projects that we are urged to participate in this year are: Make a Difference Day, Veterans History Project and Wreaths-Across-America. Veterans History Project (VHP) – all year long! The Library of Congress and its American Folklife Center invites you to join in an important national project – the Veterans History Project. We, as the Ladies Auxiliary of the Foreign Wars, have been asked to participate and help to collect the stories. The mission of the Veterans History Project is to collect the memories, accounts, and documents of war veterans from WWI, WWII, and the Korean, Vietnam, Persian Gulf Wars as well as the current action in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to preserve these stories of experience and service for future generations. This project will honor our nation’s war veterans and those who served in support of them. How? By creating a lasting legacy of recorded interviews and other documents chronicling veterans and other citizen’s wartime experiences and how those experiences affected their lives and America itself. The Veterans History Project relies on volunteers throughout the nation to collect Veteran’s stories on their behalf and we are being asked by National to participate and collect audio and videotaped oral histories.
