Mary Lombard, Chairman The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors two theme oriented scholarship programs for our youth to express their views on patriotism and the service of our veterans. The Voice of Democracy an oral essay competition for high school students 9-12 grade. Students submit to a sponsoring post a recording of a 3-5 minute essay based on this year’s VOD theme, “Does America Still Have Heroes?" Nationally there is $150,000 in scholarship awards that will be distributed to Department VOD winners; the winning entry at National level will receive a $30,000. The Patriot's Pen Contest is open to students in grades 6-8. Students will submit a 300-400 word essay on the theme "When Is the Right Time to Honor Our Military Heroes?". The first place National award is a $10,000 U.S. savings bond. Students must submit their entry to the VFW Post no later than November 1, 2009.
